A large part of the protected zone is part of a former opencast mine, where iron ore was mined. After the mine closure and the end of the open-cast mining, nature was left to itself. Today, you can still witness the traces of the mining aera: steep rocks, mine entrances and a former slack heap characterize the landscape in many areas.
